What is FriXion?

FriXion, PILOT’s line of erasable pens and markers, employs an innovative gel ink sensitive to temperature changes. When gently rubbed with the specialised tip, the ink vanishes. This erasing process generates heat through friction, allowing the ink to disappear without harming your paper. Enjoy the freedom to erase and promptly rewrite, turning errors into instant learning opportunities!

Did you know FriXion Ball and FriXion Clicker pens are also refillable?

FriXion refills allow you to extend the life of your favourite FriXion erasable pen, making it reusable again and again. Refilling is both economical and environmentally considerate, helping to reduce landfill waste. Each refill contains the same erasable FriXion ink, which can be erased using the rubber tip of your FriXion pen and written over immediately.

Pilot FriXion pens are ideal for everyday writing, studying, journaling, and creative projects. Because the ink is erasable, they’re especially handy when you want the freedom to make changes, corrections, or updates without messy crossing out. For inspiration on how students and planners use them, check out our Back-to-School Creative Ideas with FriXion Pens.

The Pilot FriXion Ball is one of the most popular pens in the FriXion range. It combines smooth gel ink with erasable technology, allowing you to write confidently and erase cleanly with the built-in eraser tip. You can explore more about erasable writing in our Complete Guide to Erasable Pens.

The PILOT FriXion pen eraser tip is specially designed to generate the heat required to erase FriXion erasable pens ink. We do not recommend using the eraser tip on anything other than FriXion pens ink - for example, ballpoint ink, gel ink, or oil-based ink.

The barrel of the PILOT FriXion Clicker pen is designed so that the side clip retracts the pen nib in and out. This clever design lets you write smoothly and then erase FriXion ink with the built-in eraser tip, without worrying about pressing a top button each time.

The special thermo-sensitive ink in PILOT FriXion pens becomes invisible when exposed to heat above 60°C. This is the same process that happens when you erase using the built-in tip of a FriXion erasable pen—the friction generates enough warmth to make the ink disappear without damaging the paper. While the writing may fade at high temperatures, it can often reappear if the page is cooled to around –10°C, showcasing the unique technology behind FriXion erasable pens.

Yes. The thermo-sensitive ink in PILOT FriXion pens can reappear when exposed to very cold temperatures, typically below –20°C (–4°F). The writing may return temporarily, but it usually disappears again once the paper warms back up.

PILOT FriXion erasable pens use a unique thermo-sensitive ink. When you rub the eraser end on your paper, the friction generates enough heat to turn the ink invisible, making it look like it has been erased. The same effect can occur if your notes are exposed to extreme heat—such as being left in a hot car or under direct sunlight.

Don’t worry! The writing can often be restored. Place your FriXion pens or notes in a ziplock bag and leave them in the freezer for 15–20 minutes. Once you return them to room temperature, the ink will usually reappear.

As with all PILOT erasable pens, we recommend never using FriXion ink on legal documents, exam papers, or when writing cheques.

Many users enjoy FriXion products for quilting projects, often using them to mark patterns and using an iron to erase them. However, we recommend you always test on a small section of the fabric to see that the ink will not stain as it cannot be guaranteed that FriXion ink is suitable for all types of fabric.

As PILOT FriXion Erasable products contain a unique ink that is thermo-sensitive, heat will turn the ink invisible (making it look like it has been erased), however, the ink will also reappear in colder temperatures, at approximately -20 degrees Celsius.

For marking and labelling fabric with confidence, try the PILOT Laundry-Tec Fabric Marker. This permanent marker is quick-drying, water-resistant, and designed specifically for cloth and materials—making it perfect for school uniforms, clothes, and fabric projects.

Just as ink can disappear from pages left in the heat, it may also turn transparent inside PILOT FriXion pens. If your FriXion pen isn’t writing, consider whether it has been exposed to high temperatures. If so, try placing the pen in the freezer for 15–20 minutes, then allow it to return to room temperature. This often restores the ink. If your pen still doesn’t write, you may need to replace the refill.

It’s normal for PILOT FriXion pens to use ink more quickly than standard ballpoint or rollerball pens. This doesn’t indicate a fault—FriXion erasable pens use a unique thermo-sensitive ink that requires more ink to be applied to the page, so the cartridges deplete faster.

If your FriXion pen has been exposed to heat (for example, left outside), the ink may also become transparent. To restore it, place the pen in the freezer for 15–20 minutes, then allow it to return to room temperature before writing again.

Please note: FriXion pens should not be used for legal documents, exam papers, cheques, or archival purposes due to their sensitivity to temperature changes. For longer writing distance, we recommend PILOT FriXion Advanced Erasable Gel Pen refills, which provide 40% more ink capacity than standard FriXion refills.
