Frequently Asked Questions

Not all FriXion pens are refillable, but many models in the FriXion range are designed with refillable ink to help reduce waste and extend the life of your favourite pen. Be sure to check the product description to see if your FriXion pen is refill-compatible.

Erasable markers contain thermo-sensitive ink that becomes clear when heated by friction, allowing you to write, highlight, and colour-code. Simply use the built-in eraser to remove errors or refine your work for perfectly planned projects. Learn more about how erasable markers work in our blog.

Yes, if the ink is exposed to temperatures below -20°C (-4°F), the writing might reappear temporarily. However, it usually disappears again when the temperature rises.

Many users enjoy FriXion products for quilting projects, often using them to mark patterns and using an iron to erase them. However, we recommend you always test on a small section of the fabric to see that the ink will not stain as it cannot be guaranteed that FriXion ink is suitable for all types of fabric.

As PILOT FriXion Erasable products contain a unique ink that is thermo-sensitive, heat will turn the ink invisible (making it look like it has been erased), however, the ink will also reappear in colder temperatures, at approximately -20 degrees Celsius.

The barrel of our FriXion Clicker pens has been designed so that the clip (on the side of the barrel) retracts the pen nib in and out. This lets you comfortably erase our FriXion ink with the built-in eraser tip, without worrying about engaging the retractable mechanism each time!

PILOT FriXion Erasable products contain a unique ink that is thermo-sensitive. When you rub the eraser end on your paper, you’ll be generating enough heat to turn the ink invisible (making it look like it has been erased). This can also happen if your pen or notes are exposed to extreme heat, like if you’ve left your notes in a warm car or in direct sunlight.

Don’t fret! The ink will reappear when it is exposed to extreme cold, so we recommend you place your pen or notes in the freezer in a ziplock bag for 15 to 20 minutes and then bring it back to room temperature. You’ll find that the ink will become visible again.

As FriXion ink is erasable, never use it on legal documents, exam papers or when writing cheques.

Caution: As the ink is erasable, never use it on legal documents, exam papers or when writing cheques. To avoid accidental erasure, do not leave writing where it may be subjected to high temperatures for a prolonged period. Ink will reappear at approximately -20°C.

The FriXion eraser tip is specially designed to generate the heat required to erase FriXion ink. We do not recommend that you use the FriXion eraser tip on anything other than FriXion ink e.g., ballpoint ink, gel ink or oil-based ink.

It is normal for PILOT FriXion pens to consume ink more quickly than standard ballpoint or rollerball pens, this does not indicate a fault. FriXion pens use unique thermo-sensitive, erasable ink, which requires more ink to be applied. As a result, the ink depletes faster. Additionally, if the pen has been exposed to heat (e.g., left outside), the ink may become transparent. If you suspect this, place the pen in the freezer for 15–20 minutes, then allow it to return to room temperature and it should resume writing as normal.

Please note: FriXion pens should not be used on legal documents, exam papers, cheques, or for archival purposes due to their sensitivity to temperature changes. If longer writing distance is a priority, we recommend the PILOT FriXion Advanced Erasable Gel Pen refills, which has 40% higher ink capacity than standard FriXion refills.

PILOT FriXion Erasable products contain a unique ink that is thermo-sensitive. When you rub the eraser end on your paper, you’ll be generating enough heat to turn the ink invisible (making it look like it has been erased). This can also happen if your pen has been exposed to extreme heat, so the ink inside the barrel of the pen has gone invisible. By placing the pen in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes and then bringing it back to room temperature, the ink should become visible again. As FriXion ink is erasable, never use it on legal documents, exam papers or when writing cheques.
